Before I watched the movie Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, I thought it would be a typical Hindi film which revolves around romance and family centered drama. However, that was not the case at all. The film was released in 2015 and has won various awards including Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. The movie begins with Alymukta (Sonam Kapoor) eloping with Prem Sharan Dhan Payo (Shah Rukh Khan) without her parents knowledge because she is convinced that he is her destined husband. Her parents are furious and call her back home. After Alymukta returns home, the parents banish the couple from their estate. Years later, Prem (Shah Rukh Khan) returns with his daughter Riddhima (Alia Bhatt) to ask Alymukta's family for forgiveness. The movie is very interesting because it has different storylines which are played out by three different characters throughout the movie. The first storyline is played by Prem Sharan Dhan Payo. He is a poor but kind-hearted man who helped an old lady when he was little. For this reason, the old lady gave him a lucky coin which he used to start his own business. The second storyline is with Alymukta who is all grown up now and it revolves around how she deals with the situation that her father puts her in. The third storyline is with Riddhima, her boyfriend Sahil (Randeep Hooda), and their relationship. I think the most interesting part of the film was how it showed very different but realistic viewpoints of Indian families, including rich ones. During the time of the film, there was a lot of money flowing around in India, but not many cared about the financial status of others. However, this is not always the case in South America where families are very close-knit. This is something to think about when watching this movie. I enjoyed this film because it showed how people can change over the years and become mature. They could not have changed this much over a span of two years. However, they could still change even after being married for 20 years! Their relationship did seem very happy at times to me due to how happy both parties were with their situations. In this movie, the character Prem Sharan Dhan Payo was extremely honest. He basically served as a moral compass. He had a very clear-cut sense of right and wrong, which is not always realistic in India. However, this did play a big part in the dramatization of the film. Alymukta's character became more mature over time and I saw this change when she agreed to go out with Prem Sharan Dhan Payo despite her father being very against it. This showed that she was responsible and that she did not want to change her opinion for other people because she knew what was right for herself. cfa1e77820
